Project locale:

Dera Ismail Khan is the second largest district of KPK with a total population of 1.93 million. In terms of development, D.I. Khan, particularly its rural areas have some of the lowest socio-economic indicators in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In this regard, the lack of employment opportunities for young people from rural areas in non-traditional occupations can have adverse impacts on higher education trends in the district. This is especially true for young women who are often discouraged from pursuing higher education because of restrictions on their mobility. Local organizations working in D.I. khan report that only 28% of the total girls of school going age in the district go to school while only a meagre 11% attend high school.

To address the above mentioned scenario, IWS is partnering with the UNDP-Youth and Social Cohesion Project to increase youth’s awareness about the importance of higher education and various career prospects after attaining a higher degree. For this purpose, IWS (with support from UNDP) is organizing 6 exposure visits of school and college going students from tehsils Paharpur and Musa Zai in D. I. Khan to selected universities in the district (details in the proposed project areas and beneficiaries section). The project will attempt to build youth’s awareness about the importance of higher education along with the various subject (and career) options available to them at the university level. This will increase their interest in pursuing university level education and tapping into the non-traditional job market that is rarely accessed by youth from rural area.
